Importance of Science for Food

We need food and water to live.

But before to asked myself I have to understand that Food science (a branch of science) is the study of the physical, biological, and chemical configuration of food and Food technology is the application of food science for the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe food. We need food as fuel as car needs it.

Now always one question raised in my mind that water is a food or water is in food? And then I discovered this definition of food ‘Any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink or that plants absorb in order to maintain life and growth’ so if I conclude according to this statement that water is a food because water is providing us a nutritious support as more than 70% a living things body comprise on water example we humans.

Imagine you are on a camping site with very little to around you to eat and consume. You see a canned food in your bag and enjoy and relish it! This canned food was produced about one year ago, harvested even earlier, but still you can enjoy it today after a year while you are camping. This I think is the importance of science and technology.

In my understandings It is difficult to preserve natural occurring food products and now science comes to enhance quality, yes there are several old tricks or formulas one of them which I witnessed in several villages in east Asian countries for example preserving meat by applying salt and drying it and then they are using it for a long time perhaps the quality and taste of meat is a question.

Taste and shelf-life. Food science and technology deals with advancements in technology such as Pulsed heat, Vacuum packaging as well as traditional technologies such as canning, pasteurization to bring healthy, nutritious, safe food to the consumers.

Over the last decades the significance of food in science has shifted towards convenience (pre-cut salad, ready to make meals, snacks, soft drinks and etc.), health (probiotics, fiber consumption), and to fulfill the demands of the changing consumer needs. Today scientist are experimenting to make food so much tasty for example banana or apple are more tasty and refreshing due to science and technology. But either these changes are beneficial for a living body for a long duration of time or we are getting immunocompromised as we are witnessing during covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic time. I am doing research on this subject but you guys have any point of disclose, please do share in comments section and I shall able to write soon to complete this topic. Thank you.
